Wellborn Quarter Horses
Wellborn, Florida
Training Barn
It was a pleasure meeting with Andrea Haller who owns Wellborn Quarter Horses. Andrea Haller and Joe Schomburg started the farm after moving to Florida from Wisconsin 20 years ago. There is no specific “discipline” of the farm, just good horsemanship. Andrea and Joe’s theory is to respect the horse while creating a balanced, relaxed, and forward horse. They want to work with the horses in a way that preserves their natural nature, but make them safe for humans. Joe closely follows methods of Ray Hunt and the Dorrance brothers. It’s clear how much the Schomburg’s respect horses after talking to Andrea. We talked for almost an hour about training methods, then she proved their training methods work by showing me a few things with her mare.
Wellborn Quarter Horses provides horse transport, training, horsemanship lessons, and clinics. They also have stalls and paddocks available for overnight boarding. Their horse transport is unique because it’s “custom door-to-door transportation”. Joe stops every night at other farms for the horses to have rest from the trailer ride. During their stops the horses are never left unattended; there is a camper in the front part of the trailer that Joe sleeps in to keep an eye on the horses. They transport all over the US, but specifically in the Southeast. Most of the training horses that Joe receives are problem horses that have proven themselves dangerous to others. Joe believes that every horse deserves the opportunity to become safe for humans to ensure that they have a good chance at a good life. Andrea has been known to keep and retire the horses that even Joe thinks are too dangerous, that way the horses have a home where they won’t be mistreated. The well being of horses is extremely important to them both.
With a spacious 107 acres they have plenty of room to host clinics. Most of the land is shaded and they have several trails running through the property. There is an obstacle course, two barns with 15 stalls, a covered arena, and a full sized permanent round pen. Some of the professionals they have hosted clinics of include Pete Ramey, Buck Brannaman, and the late Ray Hunt. If you have someone who you would like to see come to the area, send Andrea an email at andreainwellborn@yahoo.com.

Wellborn Quarter Horses’ arena is neat because the columns were brought down from an old church in Wisconsin. Joe did most of the work on the property, so wanted to try to incorporate some things that helped create “Wellborn Quarter Horses”.
