because some day you'll wish you had these
Every horse owner knows how fast time moves. The horse who once felt young and endless somehow gets older, grayer, and more precious before you're ready. It's easy to keep saying "someday" — but someday has a way of arriving faster than we expect.
You don't need the perfect season, the perfect barn, or a less busy schedule. The most meaningful photos almost always come from the season you're already in. This chapter matters because it's real.
These portraits give you more than beautiful images. They give you a reason to slow down, be fully present with the horse who means everything, and preserve something you never want to forget. One day, you'll be so glad you didn't wait.
and today is the chance to create them.
Your horse doesn't have to be perfect. Neither do you.
You don't need a picture-perfect barn, a spotless horse, or any idea what to wear. Your horse doesn't need to stand like a statue or behave like they actually read the session guide. You just need to show up with the horse you love — I'll handle everything else.
I take care of the planning, timing, location ideas, and building a session around your horse's comfort and personality. No pressure, no guessing, no feeling like you have to have it all figured out before you reach out.
You've already done the hard part — building the bond. I'll take care of turning it into something you'll always be glad you made time for.
let's plan something you'll love
show up & have fun!
choose & enjoy your photos
Once you reach out, we'll start building a session around you and your horse. We'll talk about the aesthetic you love, location ideas, outfit options, and the best timing for light, weather, and your horse's personality. I'll walk you through every detail so nothing feels overwhelming or uncertain. The goal is for planning to feel just as easy and exciting as the session itself.
This is the part most people worry about — and almost always end up loving. Your horse doesn't need to be perfectly behaved, and you don't need to know how to pose. I guide you both through everything with natural movement and relaxed direction so nothing feels forced or stiff.
We'll work with your horse's personality, take breaks when needed, and keep the whole session low-pressure. If your horse decides that grazing is a higher priority than photos for a few minutes — honestly, same. We're on horse time, and that's perfectly fine.
After your session, we'll meet on Zoom to go through your images together — because nobody should have to choose between fifty gorgeous photos of them with their horse alone at midnight.
I guide you through the selection process so picking your favorites feels exciting instead of overwhelming. Then we figure out how you want to enjoy them — digital files ready to share, wall art for your home, or something special for the barn. Once your selections are made, I carefully edit every final image before delivery so you receive photos you'll be proud to share now and treasure for the rest of your life.
Every worry you have?
Here's what I want you to know before you book: I've got every concern covered.
Nervous you'll feel awkward in front of the camera? I guide you through everything with natural posing and clear direction — no guessing, no stiff smiles, no "just stand there."
Overwhelmed by planning outfits, locations, and all the details? That's on me. I build every session around you and your horse so the whole process feels simple from day one.
Worried about how your horse will do? This is literally my world. I've been around horses my whole life and I know how to read them, work with them, and bring out the best in both of you. Your horse isn't an obstacle — they're the whole point.
With years of equestrian photography experience and a full-service approach that genuinely takes care of you, my goal is simple: make sure you walk away with images that take your breath away and an experience you'd do all over again.
I've already thought of it.
Yes! Multiple horses can be photographed together or separately.
Good news — it doesn't need to be. Most sessions happen right where your horse lives, because that's where they're most comfortable and where the real story is. You'd be genuinely surprised what good lighting and an experienced eye can do with an ordinary barn.
Lighting matters far more than a perfectly painted fence, and I've worked in enough varied locations to know how to make almost anywhere look beautiful. That said, if your horse hauls well and you have a specific dream location in mind, we can absolutely talk about it.
Most horses aren't perfectly behaved during their sessions — and they don't need to be.
I build every session with plenty of time and zero rigid expectations. We allow 2–3 hours so there's room for breaks, grazing intermissions, and whatever your horse decides is more interesting than standing still. With over 20 years of hands-on horse experience and a degree in Equine Science from the University of Florida, I know how to read horses, work with their personality, and get beautiful shots even when they're feeling opinionated.
Your horse's comfort and safety always come first — the photos will follow.
Don't stress — I've got you covered. I provide personalized styling guidance so you're not standing in your closet the night before having a full meltdown. Whether you love a classic equestrian look or something a little more relaxed and editorial, we'll build a wardrobe that flatters you and complements your horse. Yes, your horse's color gets considered too. I'm thorough like that.
Sessions begin at $500, which includes up to two hours of photography, a $200 photo credit toward your order, and a fully guided planning experience from start to finish. Most clients ultimately invest between $1,500–$2,500 in their finished photos and wall art — though there's no minimum purchase required, ever.
Every session is designed to create portraits you'll genuinely want to see in your home every day. Reach out for full pricing details and current availability!
No — all sessions are photographed with a horse you own, lease, or have permission to work with. This keeps everything safe, comfortable, and authentic. Plus, the whole point is capturing your bond with your horse. A random horse just wouldn't hit the same.
Absolutely! I'm based in Alabama but regularly travel throughout the Southeast — Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and beyond. If you're not sure whether I cover your area, just reach out. Worst I can say is "that's a stretch," but I'll probably figure out a way to make it work.
“I’ve worked with Shelly twice and am always in awe of her incredible talent and eye for capturing the most meaningful moments. After unexpectedly losing my beloved horse just a month after our first session, I’m forever grateful she preserved that final memory for me. She makes every session feel comfortable and fun, goes above and beyond for her clients, and delivers the most beautiful images you’ll treasure forever. If you want the best photographer — and a genuinely wonderful person — Shelly is your girl.”

“I cannot recommend Painted Oak Photography enough! Shelly photographed me and my horse in Tuscaloosa and made me feel like a true model while capturing my horse’s personality perfectly. Even in the August heat, she was patient, thoughtful, and went above and beyond — from helping with outfits to making sure my horse stayed comfortable. You won’t regret booking a session with her!”
