Northern Alabama Western Photographer

Hanson & Heather

Western couple takes pictures with their roping horses at sunset in a field. Couples posing ideas for cowgirl and cowboy.

A cowboy couple, their horses, and a North Alabama western photographer walk into a field… and this is what happens! Hanson and Heather were so much fun to photograph. We ended up spending the afternoon taking way too many photos together, which is why there are so many in this blog post! I love that these photos tell a story, and they remind me a lot of documentary photography which is why I had to include so many. The photos in the field with both roping horses are by far my favorites, and I love the story they create. Although Hanson thought I was crazy when I asked them to go to the “dead” part of the field, I love the midwestern vibes that the soft browns created in the photos. Hanson was also not aware that he would be getting quite the workout during this session! It was so much fun practicing various things with his rope.

I have learned a lot about the equestrian community in Alabama since moving here a few short months ago. One thing that I have learned quickly is the diversity in the community. There are so many disciplines in Alabama! There is everything from rodeo, to dressage, to saddle seat. It is quite the combination, but I think that makes the area fun and interesting. It also means that there is a place for everyone! Although Alabama does not have as many show grounds, there are plenty within driving distance. Heather and Hanson regularly haul to rodeos within several hours, even all the way to Mississippi! They are not the only ones I have met who travel either. Northern Alabama seems to be in a central location where everyone can easily access the sports they compete in. It also means I can easily access horses needing to be photographed and can be more than just a Northern Alabama western photographer!

If you are near Northern Alabama, Southern Tennessee, Northern Georgia, or anywhere in between, I would love to talk with you about photographing you and your horse. Don’t want to be in the photos? That’s okay! I also offer equine fine art photos. Who doesn’t want gorgeous photos of their horse in their home?
